At the end of 2025, I was given the opportunity to travel to Kie, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), to document a local indigenous tribe. This tribe is called the Boti Tribe. The Boti Tribe is one of the oldest tribes in Indonesia and one of the few that still preserves its traditional customs and way of life.
Today people may consider the name of this tribe somewhat taboo. In Indonesian "Boti" means "gay." Because of the name of their tribe, people carry many assumptions about them.
I was given the rare opportunity to visit the Boti community and tell their story, how it's meant to be told.

Around midday, my team and I arrived there. We were welcomed with incredible warmth, far beyond my expectations. Since I had never visited a remote indigenous community before, I had imagined that people living deep in the interior would be unfriendly and rough. But all of my assumptions were completely wrong, they were genuinely kind and welcoming.
They served us with whatever food they had: livestock they raised themselves and crops they grew with their own hands. They shared the same food they ate every day.
The dishes they prepared were not luxurious, nor did they have complex flavors. For someone like me, whose palate is used to Sumatran cuisine, the food tasted rather bland. Yet what I truly felt was how natural and authentic their food was what people today might call “real food.”
Sekitaran siang, aku bersama team sampai disana. Kami disambut sangat ramah, bahkan diluar ekspektasiku.

Nasi dengan lauk ayam yang hanya dimasak dengan garam dan air saja, sayur ubi, sayur kol, dan juga jagung bose / Rice served with chicken cooked simply with only salt and water, cassava leaves, cabbage soup, and jagung bose — a traditional corn-based dish from East Nusa Tenggara.

After lunch, my team and I were invited to walk around the village and observe the daily activities of the people there. We were shown the entire process of weaving their traditional cloth, all made completely by hand from scratch. They use natural dyes for coloring the fabric. The weaving process is carried out exclusively by the women.
Before we left, we watched the Boti people sing and dance together. These performances are part of the entertainment and joy of their daily lives in the village. All of the musical instruments they played were also handmade by the community themselves.
Sebelum pulang, kami melihat warga Boti bernyanyi dan menari. Hiburan mereka selama sehari-hari hidup disini, semua alat musik yang mereka mainkan juga buatan tangan mereka sendiri.
